GEOG58: Reduction of Summer Ice Covers in Glacier National Park/July 1999 - July 2009
Date: Winter 2011 - Foothill College
Summary: From https://glovis.usgs.gov I downloaded 2 sets of satellite images of Glacier National Park, one for July 1999 and another for July 2009. Later in a team of 3, we try to use IDRISI software to help determine if the summer ice covers in the park did shrink significantly from July 1999 to July 2009, and use the result to contemplate possible environmental effects of shrinking ice cover in the park while suggesting future studies. From the result of the analysis, the team determined that in a span of 10 years from 1999 to 2009, the park in our area of study lost nearly 50% of the summer ice covers, and we concluded that it is possible the park will lose all of its summer ice covers by 2020. Some scientists predicted that all the glaciers in the Glacier National Park will disappear by 2020, and they might be right.
